Big Boy Cast

Last week we took Joseph back to the hospital to have his splint removed and to have the hand surgeon check out his finger. Joseph started to feel unwell when we arrived and soon I could tell that he was running a fever.  By the time we got through check-in and were transferred to the clinic he was looking pretty puney.  The staff gave him a basin and cool washcloth and took us back to a room so he could lay down.
The surgeon said that his finger is healing wonderfully and then gave him the option between a week in a cast or a finger splint.  Joseph is a bit overprotective of his finger and opted for a cast.  Again - coolest kiddo in Kindergarten!
He perked up as the cast was put on and for the ride home.
But he ended up needing the bucket about as soon as we got home and then spent the night on the couch.  I have a feeling he was reacting to his pain meds as he was perfectly fine the next day and no one else came down with it.
And - he was excited to show me all the signatures he collected after school the next day!

4th time is a charm

Conversation when I picked up Joseph from school:

me: "What happened to your chin?"
J: "A tree hit it."
me: "Do you mean that you ran into a tree?"
J: "yes - during PE."
me: "um. . . . (cringing) did you have to go see the nurse again?"
J: "yes"
me: . . . . laughing hysterically
J: "mama, why are you laughing?"
me: "because if I don't laugh I'm going to cry."
J: "I've had quite a week."
me: "yes you have"
J: "that's what the nurse said to me."
me: "we're taking cookies to Nurse Jennifer tomorrow."

So for those at home keeping track:

weeks of school: 6.5
times to the "healthy office": 4

It's not easy being 6. . . .

The school nurse called soon after school started this morning and said that Joseph had smashed his finger in the door.  She said he was being so brave.

Daddy took him to the ER where daddy said he was so brave (and cute) a couple nurses fell in love with him.  Who wouldn't?!

Several hours, shots, stitches, diagnosis of an "open fracture" and a cast later. . . . .
he came home to be babied, relax and watch a movie.  He also came with some good drugs and instructions to not remove the bandages covering his splint/cast for a week.  He's going to be the coolest kid in Kindergarten.

Happy Birthday Joseph - Part 2

On Saturday we had Joseph's birthday party at our house.
He had decided on an Angry Birds theme a couple of months ago and we've been working hard getting everything ready.

Invitations:  I used a wood-grain effect on cream recycled paper and glued/stapled a real rubber band onto it  along with the red angry bird.
Because of the nature of a couple of our activities, we decided to have the party in the garage.  (This required a bit of cleaning on Saturday morning.)

I found a website with free downloads of the Angry Bird font and this pendants that I could personalize.
Game 1: Rescue Mission - Destroy the fortress and piggie guards!!
I painted balls to look like the red, yellow and blue angry birds.
I also was thrilled to find wood grain wrapping paper in the $1 aisle at Target and we wrapped the boxes we've been saving.  The kiddos then built various fortresses and then threw the balls to knock it down. We also had green "piggie guard" balloons.

Game 2: Final Mission - Smash the King Piggie and Rescue the Eggs!!
I found an online tutorial for creating a pinata and made this King Piggie pinata.  I filled it with plastic Easter Eggs filled with candy and Angry Bird confetti.  The kiddos took turns hitting it with a bat and I loved their sounds of glee when it cracked slightly and confetti burst out.  That was quickly followed by the eggs and candy.
The favors were made up of green and red buckets holding Angry Birds note books, activity books, rubix cubes and other Angry Birds items.

We also made a fun photo booth area.  Thanks to Aunt Natalie for sending Joseph the Angry Bird decals for his birthday.  They were a great prop!

This party theme was so fun to plan food around!!

The most labor intensive part of this day was the cake.  I decided to try my hand at fondant and I was extremely pleased with how it turned out!  The piggies especially turned out better than I imagined.  Joseph loved it which is the most important thing.

We loved having some of Joseph's friends over to celebrate his birthday (and their parents)!  Thanks to all of you for being a special part of our kiddo's life!

Happy Birthday Joseph - Part 1

Friday was Joseph's 6th Birthday!!!  Once again the birthday fairy filled his room with balloons while he slept.  He was excited about it when he woke up but remarked, "actually mama, I think you probably did it."

Mama also fried up some fresh donuts using a fabulously easy recipe found on Pinterest that uses refrigerated biscuits.  Genius!

The birthday boy enjoyed his special breakfast and then headed off to school.  When I went to pick him up he was wearing this fabulous birthday crown from his teacher.
Daddy and Jake came home early and we opened presents before surprise Joseph with a trip to Larry's Pizza for dinner.
We even indulged in some video games afterwards.

We can't believe that Joseph is 6 already.  The years are flying by.  We are so thankful for our precious oldest crazy child.
